Stu Ungar’s High 10 Call

Published by admin under Poker, Poker Players, Stu Ungar, Tournament

This happened in 1990 when Stu Ungar challenged reigning champion Monsour Matloubi to a heads up match. Matloubi has a 5-4 off suit while Ungar is holding a 10-9 off suit. Pre-flop Ungar raised 1,600 and Matloubi called. The flop is 3-3-7. Ungar bets 6,000 and Matloubi called. The turn is K and both players checked. The river is Q. Matloubi moves all in and Ungar said, “Either you have a 4-5 or a 5-6, I call.” Thus that’s how Ungar won on a high 10 hand.

Dan Harrington’s Squeeze Play

In the 2004 WSOP Main Event, Dan Harrington made his famous Squeeze Play. He is in middle position and rags at hand. Josh Arieh with a K-high minimum raised it and Greg Raymer called it with an A-high. Sensing weak hands, Action Dan re-raised around 60% of his chips. This made both players fold.

As you can see, it doesn’t take a strong hand to be able to trick opponents out of the pot. To make this move work, you must be consistent in showing the table that you’re aggressive and not afraid of the consequences.
