PokerBot Ethics

About a bot
Poker bots are basically computer software designed to play poker online (on behalf of an individual) for real money. Since they artificially built, commands direct the software on how to respond to moves by other players. They operate automatically and the player need not be physically present. Poker as a card game began as a game of skills and wits, competing between people. It is unfortunate that some players activate poker bots on their computers to play against other players. This is outright cheating because people usually play poker online with the belief that they are playing against other people and not automated systems. Poker bots would probably only be fair if each player were allowed to play their own system against others’ systems or consent to playing against the poker bots, otherwise it is outright deceit.
Botting action
Regardless of the ethical issues against poker bots, people use them. This is because they are more likely to produce positive end results and a win outcome is often expected. A poker bot is designed to call, raise or fold. People use poker bots because they are pre-instructed in their programs i.e. through the commands which are input into them on how to respond to moves made by other players. Moves that might be overseen by players, such as the choice of cards to pick cannot be overseen by poker bots with good profiles. Although poker bots are not 100% win-proof, well programmed poker bots are bound to accumulate money in the long-run. A poker bot operating for 18 hours a day, for example, may win 85% of the games thus eventually enabling the player to accumulate wealth in the long-run even though the 15% lost games may fall under the first set of games.
The kinds of people who use poker bots however are different. They may be used by computer geeks who get pleasure in creating new software and programs and whose sole intention may not be to make money or deceive others. Outwitting people through designing poker bots which apply artificial intelligence boosts their egos and creates a sense of satisfaction for them. Whatever the reason of using them, it is evident that most online poker sites such as the common poker technology review site, ‘newpokerbot.com’, do not condone the use of poker bots as they are unethical and as explained above, a method of cheating.
Watch out for…
There are many types of established poker bots. However, one can design a new bot simply by learning and applying the Poker Programming Language which is very easy to learn and apply. Some examples of poker bots out there are Online Poker Inspector, Win Hold ‘em and Shanky bots. The Online Poker Inspector requires third-party software to make decisions on its behalf. The Win Hold ‘em is partly designed requiring the owner to input the desired profile to get it running while the Shanky bot is regarded second only to the Poker Android (which is currently the best in the market) as it can play No Limit, Pot Limit and poker tournaments very well. Some other very common bots include the Omaha bots and Hold ‘em bots among others.
